Recreation & Activities

A beautiful place in which to live, Antigua is an ideal location for the study of medicine: serene, secure, and sustaining. Antigua provides AUA students with the most modern comforts and familiar lifestyle in the Caribbean, in a stable and safe environment. Although students should devote most of their time to studies in order to be successful, students also need to balance their life and make time for relaxation and recreational activities.

The Student Government Association at AUA is there to serve the student body and sponsors various activities to make your stay as fruitful, enjoyable and memorable as possible. Each semester, the SGA sponsors “Tasters Day” where students and faculty prepare a variety of dishes from their home country for everyone to sample as well as entertain with traditional dances. The money raised during the event is donated to local charities to help the Antiguan population. There are a number of student associations under the SGA umbrella, both professional and religious that students can join and participate in their activities. For more information about student activities and the major associations on campus, visit Student Government. Antigua is the home of 365 beautiful beaches and is a great place for water related activities such as sailing, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, as well as hiking, tennis, basketball, golf, cricket and horseback riding. There are also exercise facilities where students can work out and stay in shape.

Sailing/Boating

Sailing has been integral part of Antigua's culture for hundreds of years and is still a very big part of the island's attractions. Antigua's annual Sailing Week at Nelson's Dockyard brings together hundreds of international racing boats, recreational yachts and classic sailboats. You can charter almost any kind of boat in Antigua and you can also go on one of the circumnavigation cruises offered by several day charters.

Diving and Snorkeling

Antigua & Barbuda has hundreds of reefs and wrecks to explore. Cades Reef on the southern part of the island offers excellent snorkeling and diving. There are several scuba diving operators that can arrange all of the equipment and recommend the best diving sites. Antigua Diving Snorkeling

Swimming with Dolphins

One of Antigua's most exciting and thrilling activities is Dolphin Fantaseas, swim with the dolphins program. This once in a lifetime adventure gives participants the opportunity to experience up close and personal playtime with dolphins, while gaining an understanding of these fascinating mammals. Windsurfing

H20 Antigua Limited, situated in Dutchman's Bay, near the airport is the only exclusive windsurf club on the island. H20 offers lessons and rentals for all ages and abilities. There is also a bar and restaurant and is open all year.

Riding

There are several stables in Antigua.

Tennis and Golf

Tennis is played around the island. The annual Tennis Week brings together international competitors to the island in May.

There are three golf courses on Antigua; a 9-hole, 34-par course at Half Moon Bay, an 18-hole, 70-par course at the Cedar Valley Golf Club and another course at Jolly Harbour.

The K-Club on Barbuda also has its own 9-hole course.

Hiking and Bird watching

Antigua has many trails and tracks that are well suited for hiking. Most of the popular hikes lead to one or another of the island's many hilltop fortifications: Fort George atop Monk's Hill and Fort Barrington on the promontory at Deep Bay. The Historical and Archaeological Society frequently arranges group hikes.

Much of the appeal of the natural environment in Antigua and Barbuda is the multitude of bird species to be found there. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary on Barbuda, though accessible only by boat, is the largest bird sanctuary in the Caribbean and contains over 170 species. Long Island and Great Bird Island also offer outstanding opportunities for birdwatchers.
