AUA meets all of the following criteria, which graduates of international medical schools will need in order to practice medicine in the United States:
1. Listing by the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).
According to the official website, "The IMED is an accurate and up-to-date resource of information about international medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate government agency in the countries where the medical schools are located. The agency responsible for this recognition in most countries is the Ministry of Health. Medical schools that are recognized by the appropriate agencies in their respective countries are listed in the International Medical Education Directory". 2. Eligibility for graduates to become ECFMG Certified. International medical graduates wishing to enter a residency program or fellowship program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the United States, must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) before entering the program. Graduates must also be certified by ECFMG if they wish to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®). ECFMG Certification is required to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States. 3. Listing by the World Health Organization (WHO) The WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health. More information can be found on the official website. http://www.who.int/en/
4. Provide a curriculum based on a United States medical school model.
5. Graduates must be eligible to practice in the country (not only the jurisdiction) where the school is located in order to be eligible to practice in the various states.
6. Graduates must be eligible for the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) in order to participate in residency training. NRMP places applicants for postgraduate medical training positions into residency programs at teaching hospitals throughout the United States.
