AUA is the first and only hospital-integrated US modeled medical program in the Caribbean where clinical experience starts in the first semester. First and fourth semester students attend rounds at the most modern hospital in the Caribbean, Mount Saint Johns Medical Center. Students are exposed to patients of all age groups. In addition, students practice history taking and physical examinations with patients at our ICM lab on campus. Third and fourth semester students also attend autopsies at the hospital as part of their pathology course.
AUA strongly believes in mentoring students by providing a close faculty-to-student interaction. Small class sizes enhance learning and the interaction between students and their professors. It is our pledge to never have more than 120 students per classroom. This is unique among the Caribbean medical schools. In addition, the outstanding experience of our U.S. and international faculty (link to faculty page) meets the highest standards of modern education.
Our comprehensive modern classrooms and learning facility are designed for students who aspire to become highly skilled, compassionate physicians and nurses and plan to practice medicine and nursing throughout Canada, the United States and the Caribbean region. AUA represents the realization of the commitment made by the founding group of American physicians, nurses and medical education professionals, together with Manipal University to create a truly world class educational institution.
All incoming students (non-transfers) will be assigned to one of our many University-sponsored housing locations on the island for the first two semesters. These wonderful units are all in very safe areas and range from single rooms in hotel-like settings to two and three-bedroom furnished villas with fully equipped kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms. Housing is divided into three groups, depending on amenities provided.
AUA defines single rooms as bedrooms occupied by one person. Double rooms are bedrooms occupied by two persons. You can find full listings, descriptions, photographs and costs for housing in each group in the student housing section of our website as well as the section on independent housing site. Housing options are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
College of Medicine - AUA College of Medicine provides clinical clerkships and hospital rotation opportunities in some of the best teaching hospitals in the U.S. We have affiliations with 20 teaching hospitals where students complete their clinical training and the number is constantly growing. Although less than 5 years old, the AUA program is proud to be one of a few that has been approved by the State of New York, allowing our students the option to complete their clinical training and residencies at NY state-approved hospitals.
School of Nursing - The AUA School of Nursing has entered into an affiliation with City University of New York, Lehman College so that graduates of AUA’s Associates Program upon passing the NCLEX can seamlessly and automatically continue at the Lehman College School of Nursing. Upon successful completion of that one-year program, graduates will receive the BSN degree from Lehman College.
